Every second Wednesday is Single Origin Day at tiger, tiger. This means that we serve you a different coffee from normal, one we've selected for you to enjoy and appreciate.

Single Origins are coffee beans from one region. Most of what you will drink at cafes are blends, a combination of two or more beans from different regions. The aim of this day is to explore other coffees with you and to get you tasting and appreciating them for what they are. There are so very many coffees in the world and we feel it would be a shame to not taste more of them!

single origin day - Wednesday 22nd October 2008

We brought  you a new season Columbian Bachue! We loved this the first time! The second was no let down!  We tastes fruitiness and berries, body and sweeteness...my kinda coffee!!

single origin day - Wednesday 10th September 2008

"THE 3 LATINOS!!!" El Salvador offers both Boqueron and the Himalya of last SO Day and the Guatamalan 'La Quebrada' Estate, an organic bean, both fruity and caramel. Well this was a corker!! Fantastic coffee to work with too! The aromatics were ful on, heady stuff all day.

single origin day - Wednesday 7th May 2008

Featuring the Bunum Wo Peaberry from Papua New Guinea.  A peaberry is a kind of bean that results when coffee fruit develops only one single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. This is a richly sweet bean, maybe even sugary, with cherry fruit notes and a clean finish.

single origin day - Wednesday 23rd April 2008

The repeat performance of the Kenyan Dorman Estate was delicious. This coffee could easily stand alone as a house blend! Mr Dorman picks the best of the best in AA grade around his Estate and produces this coffee. We sold a fair bit of retail on this one, which is a good measure of the bean methinks!

single origin day - Wednesday 9th April 2008

The Organic Guatamalan was all those yummy flavours like toasted nuts and butterscotch. Floral and aromatic, it definitely was good enough to eat. Of course, difficult to get these flavours cutting through 200mL of milk in a takeaway, but for the adventurous, a shorty was divine!

single origin day #16 - Wednesday 27th February 2008

We love Gerardo's coffee from Honduras...actually we love Gerardo full stop. Word on the grape-vine is he might be back in Perth for a chat with the interested. You'll be able to taste his AA screen this week at teh tiger. Don't forget you the beans are for sale as well!

single origin day #14 - Wednesday 19th December 2007

For the last SO Day of the year, we are going to try Justin's African Mix!!! Who is Justin or Chef? Justin is Robin to Kam and Louise's Batman. When he's not roasting, he's running around the Fiori factory in tights screaming, "Holy Arabica!" Well, you get the idea...Great coffee awaits, wet and dry process beans combined to give us one more special treat for 2007.

single origin day #13 - Wednesday 5th December 2007

Today we will taste Guatamalan Antigua beans. We should taste some good caramel flavours with a medium body. Hmmm we love caramel!

See you there...

In Review: Clare just loved this coffee...can you drink too much great coffee?

single origin day #11 - Wednesday 7th November 2007

We are excited to have the new season coffee from Gerardo Barrios' family estate in Honduras for you to taste this week! Expect that great mouth feel and cocoa flavours.

In review: Quite a few of the customers have a soft spot for Gerardo's coffee anyway and this new season crop didn't let the team down. Super-dry cocoa flavours with some spice. That lushness was there in all it's glory. These beans are delivered to Fiori in hand-painted hessian bags that we had on display...love that relationship coffee!!

single origin day #10 - Wednesday 24th October 2007

To celebrate the 10th SO Day, Clare thinks it's time to blend some of your favourite beans of the last twenty weeks! With some guidance from Kam at Fiori, let's create a blend. From Monday the 15th October, have your say at the shop by choosing your favourites to help us pick the blend!

Thank you everyone! You've had your say and the blend will be equal parts of:

Kenyan Dorman Estate AA for it's sweetness and berry flavours.
El Salvador Cup of Excellence winner for it's savoury characteristics and
Ethiopian Harar 'MAO' Blue Horse for it's complexity!

Make sure you drop in on Wednesday for a cup...it will be worth it!

single origin day #9 - Wednesday 10th October 2007

On Wednesday you'll be tasting beans from the Dorman Estate in Kenya. This coffee has a AA grading, the highest available in the area. It's a high altitude coffee that displays fruit flavours you would expect from a good Kenyan bean. We should see a great balance of acidity, body and fruit in this coffee. See you then!

In review: When the customers go and 'grab' a bag of beans to take home after tasting the coffee, you know you've picked a winner! Think inky, berry goodness as an espresso and lush, cocoa flavours with milk. Some tasted cherries, vanilla and bark. Great to work with and a pleasure to serve. A big tick from the customers.

single origin day #8 - Wednesday 26th September 2007

2006 Cup of Excellence winner from El Salvador. This is a washed, high-altitude coffee grown by fourth generation coffee farmers. Winning a COE award for a farm like this is a very big thing and can bring them much greater prices at auction which converts to improvements to the farm etc.
The jury notes suggest a flavour profile with a velvety sweetness, cherry and hazelnut with a wonderful aroma and long finish! This is going to be a winner, you come in and see...

In Review: Tricky to work with, but beautiful coffee. On the day, there was a dry cocoa flavour with brazil nut bitterness that wasn't invasive and made for a beautiful cup. Beefy, soy flavours in the espresso but with a hint of milk, really special. Afavourite for some of the customers.

single origin day #7 - Wednesday 12th September 2007

Kimel Peaberry from Papua New Guinea. A bit of spice, chocolate with a lush mouthfeel.

In review: The customers and us at the tiger weren't displeased with this one, but it in no way compared to the MAO of the previous fortnight. We are still getting the odd sigh "Where's the Ugandan"? If you all behave yourselves, we might bring it back for another showing!

single origin day #6 - Wednesday 29th August 2007

Ethiopian, Harar, MAO 'Blue Horse' coffee beans. Think blueberries, lotsa blueberries...wait until you smell this coffee. Kamran thinks we're living on the wild side by choosing this one for you to taste.

In review: Geez, this was one wild ride alright! Wild in taste and wild in nature! As an espresso, you'd be hard pressed to find anything more complex. Lydia our chef, thought it smelled like 'farm' and there were times whilst working with it, that there was this smell of berries surrounding me. Jackson and I found it 'wild' to work with, but we were so excited about working with something this unique. The MAO Blue Horse was a winner.

Monday 27th August - I (Clare) tasted this fresh roasted coffee this afternoon...ooh aah. I can't wait until you guys taste this coffee! It's wild and complex, ranging from the smells and tastes of an Arabian market to flowers, cocao, fruit/ berry compote...Kam says the flavour and aromatics will flip over constantly over the next few days, so...who knows what it will taste like on Wednesday! Make sure you come and try this special bean.

single origin day #5 - Wednesday 15th August 2007

Ugandan, Mt Elgon coffee, on the border of Kenya. This coffee displays a great combination of Indonesian leafy, cedar qualities and the Kenyan winey snap at the finish. Kamran the roaster tasting this as a double espresso or double mach likens this coffee to Naomi Campbell, a bit wild, but oh so sexy!

In review: well there was some real excitement about these beans. We're already getting asked when we'll feature them again! Not for awhile because there's sooo much to taste before we recycle!

single origin day #4 - Wednesday 1st August 2007

Papua New Guinea Sigri Estate A beans were the choice. A very elegant coffee that will delight!

In Review: from the coffee geeks it was common to hear that these beans were the best PNG coffee they'd tasted. The regulars enjoyed the creamy, well-balanced nature of the coffee. It vaguley reminded some of Gerardo's Honduran coffee.

single origin day #3 - Wednesday 18th July 2007

Mysore Nuggets from the Elkhill Estate, India The flavours you should expect are delicate but rich, with low acidity, an orange-toned fruit and hints of nut, flowers and chocolate. Clare got butterscotch in her flat white.

In review: the customers loved these beans. It certainly gave the Honduran beans of week #1 a run for their money. It was a beautiful coffee to work with and Clare thought it best as a single shot espresso.

single origin day #2 - Wednesday 4th July 2007

Brazilian 100% Peaberrys from the Daterra Estate. This coffee displays flavours of malt sourdough, cassia bark, dried dark fruits. Velvety and concentrated but really soft. Black it appeared savoury, with milk like ‘choc milk'. Kam described it as, "A broody little fish that roams the deep end of the pond".

In review: the customers enjoyed seeing the peaberrys. We thought it tasted like choc milk in a flat white. Enjoyable but lacked impact.

single origin day #1 - Wednesday 20th June 2007

Pacamarra beans from Honduras grown by Gerardo Barrios. This coffee is superb. An absolute favourite at the tiger. The most balanced coffee and the best espresso Clare has ever had! Cedar-like, cinnamon, tobacco, distinct roast nut flavour and creamy. Awesome both as an espresso and with milk.

In review: This was a real winner as far as the customers thought. Knowing Gerardo,it also means that we have a soft spot for it anyway. It stands alone as a great coffee and the punters agreed!
